Resources for PAs are somewhat limited particularly if one works in a smaller business without a training or mentoring function. Developing skills, managing one’s executives and growing professionally are all areas of vital interest and need for PAs but where to turn?

That’s the the big question! And here's solution, the only one of its kind in the Northwest! PA Club meetings will include:

- Networking to build a group of contacts that PA’s can turn to with questions

- Knowledge building through bringing speakers to discuss topics that affect daily work

- Help with professional growth

- Planning sessions to discuss issues, challenges and future needs of PAs in this area.

The first meeting will feature speaker Karen Donley, personal coach and development expert, who will speak about ‘Personal and Professional Development for PAs. Karen started her career as a PA and was former HR Director for BAE Systems subsidiary MBDA.

The organiser, Katherine Lachance, prior to being MD at the Black Bull, spent many years as a senior executive tasked with developing PAs, administration personnel, HR team members and future business leaders.

This introductory first meeting is complimentary and with interest from the group can continue on an ongoing basis with additional speakers and PA related topics provided on a monthly basis.

Thanksgiving at the Black Bull

You don't see this very often at English pubs! This year at the Bull, we're having Thanksgiving. Yes, I know, it's an American holiday, but it's my favourite and I'd like to share it with you.

Thanksgiving is probably the biggest holiday in America and far less commercial than Christmas. It's a day when families get together, enjoy a good meal and have a brief pause in the hectic-ness of today's living to give thanks for the good things that have happened in the year. Different families have slightly different traditions, but the focus of the day is on family and, of course, food!

The feature of the meal is roast turkey, usually served with stuffing. Stuffing recipes tend to be regional and often have special things added (giblets, mushrooms, oysters, cranberries, apples, etc.). Usually it's made with toasted cubes of bread, but flavoured bread or cornbread is not unusual to find.

The turkey and stuffing are surrounded by a bevy of sides - mashed potato, roast potato, green beans with bacon and home-made gravy. Sweet potatoes with marshmellow (no comments until you've tried it!) are very popular and match well with the other tastes on the plate.

We don't serve a starter on Thanksgiving, although many do. We'd rather save room for dessert! And that usually means a selection of pies - pumpkin, blueberry and pecan - and a very tough decision! They're all so good, it's very hard to choose. A tiny slice of each, please!

In these days of impersonal service, it's unusual to feel appreciated, to feel valued by a business that you patronise. It's easy to give impersonal service, to not take the time to get to know the people who visit your establishment. It's easy to think of them as 'customers' and 'profit' rather than something much more than that.

Feeling appreciated today is important, and unusual. When was the last time you spent £25, £50, £100 on a meal and got a thank you card? How about a sincere, look-you-in-the-eyes-and-mean-it thank you? How personal is your relationship with your restaurant? Do they recognise you, do you know the owner?

We're very lucky because our 'guests' are fantastic, it's really easy to appreciate them. And, you know what? I just flat out enjoy their company. Their food enthusiasm, their warmth, and their fantastic stories - we're really lucky to have people like that visiting us every day!

Being avid 'diner-outers', we don't feel that those who dine in restaurants are appreciated, or that they're appreciated far too infrequently.

So we say thank you and show our appreciation, in a lot of different ways (and if you've been a recipient of one of our thank you's you'll know what I'm talking about!).

The most recent way of showing our appreciation to our guests is mentioned here. Rather than spending a whole bunch of money on four-colour brochures or glossy magazines talking about us, we'd rather spend that money you, on our guests.

We do it once a month. Join us on a Tuesday or Thursday, you may be in for a surprise!

The Only Pub in England...

I suspect we’ll be the only pub in England celebrating this one – American Independence Day, July 4th! But with Katherine’s background, it’s become a yearly tradition (wait till November comes with Thanksgiving Dinner – yum!) that we want to share with you.
